Luxus Live director, Matthew Tinari, works widely as a freelance drummer and music educator. Trained at Oberlin Conservatory under the tutelage of jazz great Billy Hart (best known for his seminal work with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band, Pharaoh Sanders, Miles Davis, and Stan Getz), Tinari's approach to the drum-set draws heavily upon Hart's comprehensive analysis of American Jazz along with his own exploration and reinterpretation of the instrument's West African source material. Tinari has performed at major venues throughout the US, Canada, Algeria, Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco, Mali, Egypt and Lebanon and honed his groove as the house drummer in gospel settings in the Nigerian Pentacostal Church (RCCG) and African-American Southern Baptist (Canaan Christian Covenant - East Oakland, CA).
